This is not getting much national press, but the Democrats in Kentucky could be poised to make some hay at least at the state level in 2006. Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher came to town on the heels of a sex scandal involving the former Democratic governor, Paul Patton. Now he's embroiled in his own scandal involving his attempt to purge Democrats from merit positions in government. One staffer has already been indicted (21 felony charges, I believe) and the Democratic Attorney General (Stumbo) is gunning for bear.
The Lexington Herald Leader is now calling for the governor to testify under oath to a grand jury investigating the matter.

The only current Democratic member of the Congressional delegation from Kentucky is Ben Chandler, who lost to Fletcher in the gubernatorial race.
Now it looks like Fletcher's administration is imploding, and Democrats there smell blood. A local Dem has started a blog to chronicle the escapades, DailyKos should consider linking to it.

Being a proud Kentuckian, I can tell you that this state was heavily Democratic even into the early 90's, and is still that way based on voter registrations. With some work, it could get there again.
