Interesting little tidbit, inspired by Bush's latest budget.
In the last two years, we have added one trillion dollars to the national debt. Bush's new budget will create a $410 billion deficit, and the war appropriations are separate from the budget, so we could potentially hit a $10 trillion debt before he leaves office.
**UPDATE - June 4th, 2008
The senate just approved the budget for next year, and buried in it is the official "raising of the debt limit" to over $10 Trillion.

In May 2001, the debt was at $5.7 trillion, and Clinton had set records in the rate at which we were paying it down.

$4.3 trillion in debt. In only 8 years. And this doesn't include future obligations to health care for vets, the prescription drug plan, and on and on.
If the Democrats can't beat the Republicans from now on with regards to the issue of fiscal responsibility, then truly, it's because people are completely oblivious to facts and reality.
